VBF supported VDOT’s establishment of U.S. Bike Routes 1 and 76 in 1982.  For nearly 40 years, VBF has repeatedly pushed VDOT to map, sign, realign, and improve bicycling infrastructure along those routes, via both paved-shoulder retrofits and bike lanes and/or shared-use paths associated with road widening projects. More recently (2012), VBF instigated the development of U.S. Bike Route 11, which largely follows the Blue Ridge Parkway and Skyline Drive in Virginia and extends into both North Carolina and Maryland.
