VDOT Statewide Bicycle Program
1980s
In the 1980s, VBF supported VDOT’s designation of a statewide Bicycle Coordinator and its establishment in 1989 of a statewide Bicycle Advisory Committee. Ever since, VBF has continuously and actively participated in the statewide BAC and its successor, VDOT’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee. When the VDOT statewide bicycle and pedestrian coordinator position became vacant for many months twice during the 2000s, VBF pushed Virginia Transportation Secretaries to promptly hire a well-qualified candidate to fill that crucial position.
Supported Bills
Supported bills to establish regional bicycle and pedestrian coordinators (SJ 311, 1997) and bicycle and pedestrian advisory committees (SJ 311, 1997; HB 2677, 2005) for each VDOT construction district. After the amended SJ 311 was enacted, VDOT voluntarily established the Hampton Roads Pedestrian and Bicycle Advisory Committee in 1999.
